Results
Within 3 months of launching the AI-powered features, Design Pickle realized significant improvements across key metrics:
30% reduction in number of revisions per design task
25% increase in number of design tasks completed per week
20% improvement in customer satisfaction scores
15% reduction in time spent writing briefs
By guiding users to provide complete information and visual references upfront, the AI capabilities enabled designers to deliver on expectations more quickly. Better alignment, fewer revisions and faster turnaround times drove increased customer satisfaction and designer productivity.
The Problem
Design Pickle users often struggled to clearly articulate their design needs and vision when submitting new tasks. Many lacked the vocabulary to describe visual styles and elements they wanted.
This led to:
Vague and incomplete design briefs
Misalignment between user expectations and designer output
Multiple revision cycles to get designs right
Inefficient use of designer time and resources
The Idea
As Product Designer, I proposed integrating generative AI capabilities into the Design Pickle platform. The goal was to assist users in crafting high-quality design briefs and providing visual references. This would result in:
Clearer communication of design requirements
Fewer revisions and faster project completion
More efficient designer utilization
Improved customer satisfaction
The Action
I spearheaded the design of two AI-powered features to support a user’s design request workflow:
AI-Assisted Brief Writing
Leverages natural language AI to guide users through the brief creation process
Prompts users with relevant questions to elicit key details (e.g. brand style, imagery, copy, etc.)
Suggests improvements for vague or incomplete responses
Generates a structured design brief summarizing all inputs
AI Image Generation
Allows users to generate sample images illustrating desired visual styles
Offers customization options (layouts, color palettes, content, etc.)
Creates a mood board of AI-generated and user-selected reference images
Attaches mood board to design brief for designer reference
My role encompassed:
Design (UI/UX)
Created high-fidelity mockups of the AI-assisted brief and image generation flows
Designed intuitive interfaces for eliciting user input and presenting AI suggestions
Conducted user testing to validate and refine UX
Leadership
Led collaboration across Product, Engineering, and Sales teams to align on customer pain points
Involved in development process from design to launch, guiding engineers and providing ongoing feedback
Strategy
Analyzed designer feedback and revision data to identify areas for improvement
Defined success metrics around revision cycles, designer output, and customer satisfaction
Conducted cost-benefit analysis to estimate ROI of AI feature development
User Flow
I designed two distinct user flows to streamline the design request process and enhance user productivity — Request Assist for AI-assisted brief writing and Create Assist for AI image generation.
Both flows were optimized to minimize user interactions while maximizing the quality and clarity of design inputs.
Ideation & Wireframing
In developing the AI-assisted features for Design Pickle's platform, my primary focus was on creating an intuitive and seamless user experience that would enhance the design request process. The ideation phase centered around two key objectives: simplifying brief creation and providing visual inspiration.
For the Request Assist feature, I drew inspiration from conversational AI interfaces, aiming to make the brief-writing process feel like a natural dialogue. The wireframing process explored various layouts to present AI-generated suggestions in a clear, actionable format. I experimented with different interaction patterns, ultimately settling on a checklist-style interface that allows users to easily select and customize AI-generated directions.
The Create Assist feature required a different approach. Here, the challenge was to integrate AI image generation seamlessly into the existing design request workflow. During wireframing, I explored various ways to present generated images and allow for easy selection and incorporation into the brief. The final design utilizes a gallery-style layout, enabling users to quickly browse and choose relevant visual references.
A key insight that emerged during the low-fidelity wireframing stage was the need for transparency in the AI generation process. This led to the inclusion of a loading screen with a playful animation, informing users that their results are being generated and allowing them to continue with other aspects of their request in the meantime.
Another crucial element was ensuring users maintained control over the AI-generated content. The wireframes incorporated easy editing and customization options for both text suggestions and generated images, allowing users to refine the AI output to match their specific needs.
The iterative wireframing process also revealed the importance of seamless integration between the AI features and the main design request form. This insight led to the development of a modular design that allows AI-generated content to be easily added to the existing brief structure.
By focusing on user-centric design principles and leveraging the strengths of AI technology, the wireframing phase laid the groundwork for a more efficient and user-friendly design request process. The resulting interface designs aim to empower users with AI assistance while maintaining the flexibility and control necessary for creative work.
Final Design
To create an intuitive and efficient AI-assisted design request experience, I designed a visually appealing and user-friendly interface that seamlessly integrates AI capabilities into the existing Design Pickle platform.
The final design for the Request Assist feature focuses on simplicity and clarity. The interface presents a clean, uncluttered prompt input area where users can easily describe their design needs. This minimalist approach ensures that users aren't overwhelmed and can focus on articulating their ideas.
A key element of the design is the loading screen, which features a playful animated character riding a rocket. This fun touch adds personality to the AI generation process, making the brief wait time more engaging for users. The loading screen also includes helpful text explaining that users can minimize the window and continue with other aspects of their request while the AI works in the background.
Once the AI generates suggestions, the interface presents them in a clear, checkbox-style list. This format allows users to easily select all or specific suggestions they want to incorporate into their brief. The design also includes options to regenerate results or add custom directions, giving users full control over their creative brief.
The final implementation of the AI-generated suggestions in the main request form utilizes a clean, list-style format with icons for easy editing and removal. This integration ensures that the AI-assisted content blends seamlessly with the user's manual inputs, creating a cohesive design brief.
Throughout the interface, I incorporated subtle visual cues and microcopy to guide users through the AI-assisted process. For example, the "BETA" tag next to the Request Assist and Create Assist features informs users about its experimental nature, while the "Learn More" link provides easy access to helpful resources and additional information about the tools.
The color scheme and typography are consistent with Design Pickle's brand identity, ensuring that the new AI features feel like a natural extension of the platform rather than a separate tool. The use of familiar UI elements, such as checkboxes and edit icons, makes the interface intuitive for existing users while still introducing powerful new capabilities.
By focusing on user-centered design principles and seamless integration of AI technology, the final design empowers users to create more comprehensive and effective design briefs with minimal effort. This approach aims to enhance the overall user experience, streamline the design request process, and ultimately lead to better outcomes for both clients and designers.

Reflection
Introducing AI assistance into the design workflow was a major step forward for the Design Pickle platform. It highlighted opportunities to harness technology to empower users and optimize processes.
Some key takeaways:
Generative AI can enhance and scale creative work, but human input remains essential
Preserving designer agency is crucial when incorporating AI
Soliciting user feedback during development is key to ensuring AI features deliver value
Measuring concrete outcomes is necessary to demonstrate ROI
Going forward, additional AI capabilities could include intelligent task routing, design asset tagging and retrieval, and automated formatting. Keeping the user experience frictionless while augmenting designer creativity will be an ongoing priority.
